The Championship is already proving to be popular with slots filling up quickly, booking is available online via the CPSA website http://www.cpsa.co.uk/championships – by phone 01483-485400 or fill in the form in the Pull magazine.

World class sporting targets and Southdown go hand-in-hand and it goes without saying that this championship will probably be the best English Sporting for years. Club Directors Shaun Miller and Greg Swan have put together the shooting event to include a three day Sportrap with £29 re-entry, a 25 bird pool shoot with flash prizes and a fantastic high gun prize. Don’t miss out on the shooting party of the year, on Saturday evening with a BBQ, hog roast, bar and band.

Course Director Shaun Peckham has come up with a new layout and is incorporating new stands and shooting positions that will not have been shot before. This coupled with the other ground improvements should prove to make this one of the best shooting competitions this year.

Book today to ensure your place and squad if you want to keep up-to-date on this and other Southdown shooting events and news, sign up here to get updates by email or text.

The 1st October sees the end of our first quarter since taking over the club and so in this, our third Newsletter, I’m pleased to say we have finally got the new signage up which is not just a cosmetic change but also a health and safety improvement as we’ve included new warning signs in all stands and around the ground.

September has again seen four well-attended competitions, the most important being the CPSA Greater London, Surrey, Sussex and Kent FITASC Championship. With well over a hundred entries, we shot four layouts over three days. I’m pleased to say our head instructor John Hughes won his class to become Sussex Senior FITASC Champion 2010 with a score of 86.

Other notable wins were junior’s Dan Christian who won the class with a score of 79, Nathan Hales who is now Kent Junior Champion and the overall winner Mark Winser, who took the high gun to become Kent County and overall competition Champion with an excellent 92. It really does feel like we are getting back to the Southdown of old, so thanks again to all our regulars and the competitors for your support.

Those of you who have been up to the club in recent weeks will have noticed new fencing and gates going up, and along with other continuing improvements, I think we are making headway into really smartening up the place. Because of the interest in club developments, I have started including photographs on our Facebook page, so if you want to keep up-to-date please look us up online. The long overdue clubhouse works have just started and we hope to have the first floor completely renovated by mid November, which can’t happen soon enough for me.

Finally we have started stocking Hull Cartridges so we now offer a huge choice of shells from both Lyalvale and Hull. If you want a specific cartridge or game load that’s not in stock please ask Helen, who will be pleased to get you a special order.

Coming up in October we have the South East Region Inter County FITASC Competition from the 8th to 10th, the regular 100 Reg Sporting combined with 100 Reg Sportrap on Sunday 17th and 31st which are really good fun if you like your shooting to be a bit more testing and finally two clubman 80 bird competitions on the 3rd and 24th, so don’t miss out. If you’ve not entered before come and have a go, you never know you might win something and don’t forget we pay out on the day so there’s no hanging about.

Another date for your diary is our firework party on Friday 5th November – look out for our flyers for more details.

This year 36 guests shot the competition and as most were new to shooting, qualified instructors were on hand to help. The event format included a practice round with our instructors providing guidance and support, followed by a really exciting and what turned out to be very competitive competition.

The high gun prize was shared by Andy Allan and Martin Gosmark with a score of 25/30. The best team award went to Alan Kentfield, Leo Farrow, Tim Parsons, John Beacon and Phil Seear. In line with tradition we had a save the clay prize for the competitor (who will remain anonymous) who managed to preserve the greatest number of clays, which we really do appreciate.

The sweepstake was very successful and raised over £100 for the Worthing Mayors Charity, the challenge this year was to guess the total number of target hits, this was won by Jeremy Wotton who piped Richard John by 1 point to guess the total hits which was 749.
