New CPSA Officers
Written on December 9, 2010 at 11:25, by Helen
We are pleased to announce the Club now has three extra CPSA Club Safety Officers. Lloyd Peckham, Andrew Lally and Shaun Miller attended the one day course held at Bisley on Saturday 21st November.
Paul Rendell and Gerry Keegal kept the day relevant and interesting packed with useful and up-to-date information. We believe this is an excellent, value for money training day which we would recommend to all shooters.
In addition to our new Safety Offices, Shaun Pekcham and Gun Instructor, Mhairi-Ann Hill are also trained CPSA Safety Officer.

Written on November 21, 2010 at 11:25, by Helen
To ensure our FITASC competitions continue to be run to the very highest of standards, on Saturday 21st November, Southdown enlisted the services of BICTSF trainer Hugh Smith, who gave the one day FITASC ref’s course to 7 of our regular club ref’s.
Congratulations goes to Ref’s Alex, Arnie, John, Mark, Robert, Scott and Tony who all passed with flying colours so there can be no arguing now, not that there were any in the first place!!
Signs of Change at Southdown
Written on October 13, 2010 at 13:36, by Helen
The 1st October sees the end of our first quarter since taking over the club and so in this, our third Newsletter, I’m pleased to say we have finally got the new signage up which is not just a cosmetic change but also a health and safety improvement as we’ve included new warning signs in all stands and around the ground.
September has again seen four well-attended competitions, the most important being the CPSA Greater London, Surrey, Sussex and Kent FITASC Championship. With well over a hundred entries, we shot four layouts over three days. I’m pleased to say our head instructor John Hughes won his class to become Sussex Senior FITASC Champion 2010 with a score of 86.

Michael Jones Shooting Challenge at Southdown
Written on October 13, 2010 at 13:30, by Helen
Southdown Gun Club was pleased to host the 2010 Michael Jones Clay Pigeon Shooting Challenge in our corporate area on Friday 24th September and despite a week of mixed weather, we were very lucky to get a window of sunshine on the day.
This year 36 guests shot the competition and as most were new to shooting, qualified instructors were on hand to help. The event format included a practice round with our instructors providing guidance and support, followed by a really exciting and what turned out to be very competitive competition.
The high gun prize was shared by Andy Allan and Martin Gosmark with a score of 25/30. The best team award went to Alan Kentfield, Leo Farrow, Tim Parsons, John Beacon and Phil Seear. In line with tradition we had a save the clay prize for the competitor (who will remain anonymous) who managed to preserve the greatest number of clays, which we really do appreciate.
The sweepstake was very successful and raised over £100 for the Worthing Mayors Charity, the challenge this year was to guess the total number of target hits, this was won by Jeremy Wotton who piped Richard John by 1 point to guess the total hits which was 749.
Southdown Coach Is Sussex CPSA FITASC Champion
Written on October 13, 2010 at 13:26, by Helen
John Hughes, Southdown Gun Club’s Head Coach, won his class to become Sussex CPSA FITASC Champion.
John, a well know face on the southern shooting circuit, shot a very credible score of 82/100, proving that as well as being able to talking the talk, he can also walk the walk.
At the other end of the scale, Dan Christian won junior class with a score of 79/100 and Nathan Hales was crowned Kent Junior Champion with a very strong 52/100. Both names to watch for in the future!
The September FITASC Competition was the second such event since taking over the club. Club Course Director, Shaun Peckham, set out multiple layouts, three new and one old system which were well received by competitors who saw some challenging targets on the gallops and valley layouts.
