What to Expect from Talent Pool

This year, we are celebrating 35 years of Southdown Gun Club! We are proud to have some of the finest shooting facilities in the UK, a fantastic instructor team led by CPSA Coach of the Year, Simon Arbuckle, and one of the largest on-site gun shop available to shooters.

There’s a whole host of people that make Southdown tick, and here are just a few of the staff who have kept us as the Nation’s Favourite Shooting Ground year on year…

Shaun Miller – Managing Director

How did you get into shooting?

I started shooting as a teenager, but in my early twenties I didn’t have the money to keep the hobby up, so I sort of stopped. I didn’t take it up again until 1999 when aged 34 I got back into shooting, and with a bit more disposable income I purchased a Beretta 686e, which I shot for quite a while with reasonable results.

What gun do you shoot?

I now shoot a Beretta SO5 with 32” barrels, I have shot this gun for a few years now and last year I had a custom stock fitted, so now the only excuse when you miss is the operator!

How do you take your brew?

Milk no sugar….

Simon Arbuckle – Head Coach

How long have you worked at Southdown?

4 Years full-time, although I did start doing the part-time “have a go” sessions as far back as 2004.

What’s a typical day like for you at the club?

Varied!  First thing is to check all traps are working and the targets are as they should be, the wind can play havoc with them at times. Then it’s lessons ranging from beginners to experienced shots.  Also, there will be ad-hoc tasks, customers enquiring about guns, and ensuring the ground staff are carrying out what needs to be done for the day or forthcoming competitions.

What is your favourite discipline?

Sue Vella – Receptionist

What’s a typical day like for you at the club?

I work Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday and the odd weekend.  Reception is usually busy. I assist our customers face-to-face, by email, and answering the phones and I book lessons, Have-A-Go’s, Stag and hen Do’s plus corporate bookings. I organise courses for Instructors to run and assist in the preparation of Competitions

What is your favourite sport aside from shooting?

Hydro Spinning (cycling in water to music – great funJ)

Tim Brough – Technical Assistant

How did you get into shooting?

I have had air rifles, rifles, and shotguns from an early age, so it’s always been a hobby of mine.

What’s a typical day like for you at the club?

With so many traps, ancillary equipment, cables, etc. to repair and sort out every day, it is always full on!
