New Targets at Southdown
January 17, 2014

Probably one of the few grounds in the country that can boast our doors have been open for 30 years!!  We’ve weathered the storm of two recessions and following significant investment in the last 3.5 years we’re here to stay!!

During the last three decades we’ve hosted many major competitions including the World Sporting Championship in 2005, the Classic in 2009, and The English Open in 2011 and of course our annual Masters, as well as numerous CPSA regional and National Inter-County events.

Specialising in sporting targets, Southdown can host, English Sporting events on up to two 100+ bird layouts simultaneously, Sportrap on the permanent 100 bird layout, FITASC new system up to 200 birds or 100 Bird FITASC and 100 Bird Compak.

The run up to Southdown’s 30th Birthday Anniversary couldn’t have been marked in a better way than by winning the prestigious Clay Pigeon Shooting Association Ground of the Year Award 2013, given to the ground that has made the most significant contribution to the shooting experience of CPSA members.  This award, voted for by shooters, confirmed overwhelmingly that Southdown really is the ground to shoot at!!

Under the new ownership the ground has gone from strength to strength, the ground has seen significant improvements.  Too many to list here with new and upgraded shooting positions, traps and automatic release systems, reliability on the ground is improved. We have attempted to improve disabled access as we renovate areas and have now managed to refurbish the clubhouse, kitchen and meeting rooms. As well as installing a permanent marquee hospitality area including, licensed bar and seating for over 100 people. This is all complemented by the new shop that we opened in partnership with Raker, stocking a large selection of new and used guns, cartridges and clothing.

Renowned as the home of clay shooting in the South of England, we’ve earned the reputation as the ground to be at for first class sporting targets however we also have most of the popular disciplines including Skeet, ABT, DTL, Compak, FITASC and Sportrap.  At the end of 2013 we added a dedicated Game Target Area with 5 Simulated Game stands including High Driven, High Crow, Grouse, Teal, 2 man Flush.

2014 Festival of Shooting …….

To celebrate this milestone as well as hosting many County Championships we’re planning an Special 30th Anniversary celebration of shooting over the August Bank Holiday weekend to include FITASC, Sporting and Sportrap Championships.  The weekend will be commemorated with an anniversary party to mark this historic milestone, it’s sure to be an event to remember including live music, professional firework display and much more.  We hope you’ll come join in the celebrations!!
