Shooting Practice

Southdown Gun Club and Shooting School has been offering shooting practice on our magnificent shooting ground since the ’80s. Since our beginnings, we have continually upgraded our Sussex shooting range facilities to the extent that we now have an unrivalled “pay and play” shooting ground which caters for the majority of the most popular disciplines.

The most popular shooting practice range is our English Sporting layout, which is one of the largest in the South East – if not the Country. There is also a Compak shooting range, where you can shoot Sportrap and FITASC old system, or for trap shooters we have a permanent Skeet range, plus an ABT and DTL layout, all of which are available on a ‘turn up and shoot’ basis.

Our shooting practice system

We operate the Promatic Claymate system on our shooting practice range. This is a card-based system that enables you to buy targets at the club house for use on any of the ranges. Once you have added credit to the card, simply insert your card into any of the claymate controllers that are located on every active shooting position, this will show you your available credit and you can start shooting. If you are shooting with a friend, they can push the button for you. If you are a solo shooter you can use the time delay mode or ask for a caddied round where we will send a member of the ground staff with you. Please note that this service is subject to availability.

Your safety is our priority

Health and Safety is paramount on our shooting practice range, and we ask you to help us to maintain a safe environment for everyone. When booking in for the first time, we ask that you read and sign to say that you understand our rules of use. It is mandatory to wear hearing and sight protection at all times in our Sussex shooting range areas, regardless of whether you are shooting or not. We also recommend that you wear a hat as, although every effort is made to set the targets to avoid clay fall out, there is always a possibility of falling clay or plastic wad. Remember that “Good shooting is no accident”.

Our Sussex shooting practice ranges are available Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (please check our fixtures calendar as occasional Sundays we may be closed for competitions).

Please can we remind all customers visiting that eye and ear protection must always be worn on the ground. We’ve noticed recently that PPE wearing has slipped a bit and in order for us all to be safe on the ground we want to remind everyone of the importance of wearing eye and ear protection, caps, and sensible footwear. We have a great selection of PPE to buy in a shop to suit everyone if needed on your visit. PPE will be supplied to you if you are attending an experience or lesson with us.
